Pastelevision is brave for a debut album in that Chelsea unleashes some of her most experimental production that still feels grounded through sonic through-lines, and also because it is a conceptual album. From video- game inspired visuals and sound design that’s reminiscent of carnival merry-go-rounds, to stories about getting played and playing the game that is the music industry.

She finds ways to incorporate the gameshow theme throughout the project both sonically and lyrically and what we see is an artist transparent in her experiences, enthusiastic about her growth as a woman and as an artist, and someone enthralled by the competition. We may not hear the full range of Chelsea’s artistic capabilities (just yet), but we do get a solid glimpse of who she is.

Rap is at the centre of this project undeniably, but Chelsea incorporates her influences like fellow Ohio- native, Kid Cudi, in tracks like No Tissues – a clear marriage between emo rock and trap production.

Chelsea Pastel is an artist to watch because beyond a budding writer and performer, we see someone who truly channels their pain into their creative process and uses it as inspiration – Pastel proves herself an alchemist too. Pastelevision is the hero’s journey and if you’ve seen yourself in her pain then you will likely stick around to see what else she comes up with.
